A New York actress and singer accused of abducting a baby girl from a fake casting call was due to appear in a Toronto court Tuesday, The Toronto Globe and Mail reported.

Michelle Marie Gopaul, 24, was charged last week with the Dec. 30 abduction of one-month-old Roma Patel and was denied bail Saturday.

Viral and Sejal Patel took their daughter to a casting call for a Bollywood movie shoot after responding to an advertisement family friend Bhupendra Mane had spotted on Craigslist.

Gopaul allegedly used the alias “Diane Miller” in email correspondence with Mane and specified that the baby in question had to be female. Mane told the Patels to attend the audition at 9:30pm local time on Dec.30, believing that other couples were attending the casting.

Gopaul allegedly told the Patels that she was a casting director and took their baby into an adjoining room. The parents said that Gopaul then disappeared with their daughter through another exit.

Four hours later the baby was taken to a police station in the city’s east end by a member of the public.

Gopaul, who has been living in Toronto for several months, will appear in court at Toronto’s Old City Hall charged with abduction of a person under 14.
