Albany legislators can kiss contributions from the New York Building Congress goodbye if they don’t pass a state budget soon, the group warned in a scathing letter to its members this morning.

The coalition urged members to withhold donations to legislative candidates until a budget is passed.

“Either deny requests for contributions and use the budget impasse as your reasoning, or contact those you have supported in the past and let them know that future contributions are contingent upon a promptly approved budget,” the letter advises.

Losing financial support from everyone in the Building Congress is no small thing for lawmakers: The group comprises 400 labor, government and business organizations, totaling about 250,000 individual members. Many are politically active.
