MONTICELLO, N.Y. — A 27-year-old man is accused of sexually abusing his 7-month-old daughter and leaving her to die in the woods before claiming she had been abducted.

A Sullivan County grand jury indicted Cory Clarke of Monticello on Wednesday on charges of attempted murder, sexual abuse, incest, assault, reckless endangerment and abandonment.

He’s accused of abusing the baby on July 3 and leaving her in a remote area the next day before claiming she had been abducted from a Wal-Mart. Police found the child, now back with her mother, who had split up with Clarke.

Clarke’s lawyer, Henri Shawn, didn’t immediately return a call.

District Attorney Steve Lungen said Clarke faces up to five to 25 years in prison if convicted.
