A Staten Island man has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for loan sharking, extortion and arson conspiracy.
Thirty-three-year-old James LaForte Jr. was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Trenton.
Prosecutors say he was part of a ring that made high-interest loans to debtors and used violence to collect from those who failed to make timely payments.
He also admitted to ordering an accomplice to torch the car of a former employee of his real estate title company.
The sentence imposed Monday is to run concurrently with time LaForte is serving on New York state charges.
