MINEOLA, N.Y. — A Long Island woman has been charged with aggravated DWI and other crimes following a crash that left her 3-year-old daughter a quadriplegic.

Samantha Alfaro was held on $50,000 bail following her arraignment Monday in Nassau County Court.

Authorities say the 18-year-old Bay Shore driver veered across a highway and into a tree on March 8. Her daughter was in the back seat and suffered a broken spine.

Police say the child safety seat was in the trunk.

Alfaro was charged under the 2009 Leandra’s Law, which increases penalties for drunken drivers involved in crashes that hurt children.

Her attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.

The child is now in an upstate rehabilitation center.
