New York City voters approve Props 3, 4, 5 in wins for Adams

By Matt Troutman

Big Apple voters gave Mayor Eric Adams a rare recent victory as they approved a slew of ballot proposals his critics blasted as a power grab.

Proposals 3, 4 and 5 all passed Tuesday and will revise the city’s charter to respectively give estimates of potential laws’ cost, bestow more power on the mayor over public safety legislation and require the city to assess the cost of maintaining properties and investments.

The city-focused measures passed along with the statewide Prop 1, which aimed to protect abortion rights.

"This is a great day for everyone who desires a safer city, cleaner streets, greater fiscal responsibility, transparency in the city’s capital planning process, and, of course, access to abortion care," Adams said in a statement.

Along with Proposal 2, which gives the sanitation new powers to crack down on public trash, they were five measures that Adams pushed over the objections of City Council members.

The only Adams-backed proposal to fail was Prop 6, which created a new role to support minority- and women-owned businesses.

Prop 2 passed enabling giving NYC Sanitation Department new powers to combat trash

By David Spector

Prop 2 has passed in New York City, which will give the sanitation department new powers to crack down on public trash.

The proposal will change the city charter to allow the Department of Sanitation to crack down on street vendors in order to keep streets clean from trash.

It will also give the Sanitation Department new powers to keep parks and highway medians clean.

Opponents of the measure said that it would create undue burdens on small businesses and street vendors.

Trump sees surge of support across all five boroughs compared to 2016, 2020

By Katherine Donlevy

Trump earned a surge of support in all five boroughs in his campaign for president compared to the 2016 and 2020 elections.

With more than 97% of scanners reporting, Trump boasted 30.44% of New York City’s vote in Tuesday's election, according to the city Board of Elections.

The chunk is the highest total Trump has seen across his three presidential bids, which have steadily grown stronger across the years — with support soaring in The Bronx, Manhattan and Queens.

Most of Trump’s growing support can be tracked down to The Bronx, where ballots cast in his name soared 35% between 2020 and 2024. This year, 91,542 residents voted for the Republican compared to just 67,740 when he was up against President Biden.

Manhattanites also made a major shift toward Trump between the past two elections: he racked up 103,060 votes this year, a 20% surge compared to 2020.

The majority of the support stemmed from Trump’s home borough of Queens, where 247,891 residents pledged their votes to the ex-president. The total marks a 16.5% surge compared to the number of votes he won in 2020.

Support for Trump also rose in Brooklyn and Staten Island but by much smaller margins, where voter turnout in his name increased by nearly 8% and just 0.7%, respectively.

Trump’s improved voter margin marks a growing support base that has been building since he started his political career in 2016, when he won just 18% of New York City’s vote. He jumped to 23% in 2020.

Nearly 2,58,600 New Yorkers turned out to vote in 2024 compared to a whopping 3,066,581 in 2020 and 2,759,389 in 2016.
