Democrat Pat Ryan wins 'bellwether' NY-19 special election
By Zach Williams
Democrat Pat Ryan has beaten Republican Marc Molinaro in a special election to represent the Hudson Valley's 19th Congressional District through the end of the year.
Ryan had 51.1% of the vote compared to 48.8% for Molinaro with 100% of the vote counted late Tuesday night, according the unofficial tally from the state Board of Elections.
The victory adds a House seat back to the Democratic column after Antonio Delgado resigned to become lieutenant governor earlier this year.
Some political observers considered the race an early indicator of how the midterm elections will go this November after Ryan campaigned on hot cultural issues like abortion and gun control.
Molinaro will compete for the newly-drawn 19th District this fall while Ryan runs for a full term in a newly drawn 18th District to the south.
