ALBANY, N.Y. — Senate Conference Leader John Sampson says a closed-door leaders meeting hasn’t resulted in a deal to address New York’s $3.2 billion deficit, only a commitment to keep talking for perhaps several more days.

The main sticking point continues to be Gov. David Paterson’s proposal to cut school aid by 4.5 percent midyear, which school advocates say would trigger teacher layoffs and higher property taxes in the spring.

Senate President Malcolm Smith says the negotiations could come up with a deal that falls short of closing the full $3.2 billion deficit, but he wouldn’t say if that’s likely.

After a target date to agree on a deficit-reduction plan came and went last week, Tuesday was supposed to be the day Paterson wanted lawmakers to OK a plan.
