NY skin cancer soaring
ALBANY — Tanorexia may be the real deal.
The rate of melanoma skyrocketed by a blinding 72 percent in New York over 10 years from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s, according to an American Cancer Society report released yesterday.
The increase in the most deadly form of skin cancer coincided with a boom in the indoor-tanning industry, the society said.
Tanning opponents urged the state Senate to pass a bill, already approved by the Assembly, to ban everyone under 18 from tanning booths.
The Indoor Tanning Association calls the connection to cancer mere “speculation.”
