Two prominent state Democratic lawmakers who are pursuing potential impeachment of Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday they’re infected with the coronavirus.

Powerful Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) and Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Queens) — one of Cuomo’s chief critics in the Legislature over pandemic-related nursing home deaths — both stressed they’re experiencing only mild symptoms after testing positive for COVID-19.

Heastie recently directed the Assembly Judiciary Committee to conduct an impeachment investigation of Cuomo over mounting sexual harassment accusations as well as the nursing home scandal.

“After feeling under the weather, I was tested for COVID-19 and received a positive result this morning. I am currently experiencing only extremely mild symptoms. I am in frequent contact with my physician and look forward to a full recovery,” said Heastie, the Assembly Democratic leader who is in the middle of negotiating a new budget with the embattled Cuomo and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins (D-Yonkers).

Heastie said he received the first of two COVID vaccine doses on Saturday.

“With the upcoming New York state budget deadline, I plan on remaining in the Capital Region and working from my Albany residence,” he said.

“This is a reminder to everyone that we must continue to be vigilant — wear a mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing and get tested if you are feeling any symptoms.”

For his part, Kim, in a statement on Twitter, said, “Dear friends and colleagues, unfortunately I have tested positive for COVID. I am well and have only mild symptoms. I am in quarantine and have cancelled in-person engagements for the next 10 days.”

“The virus is still spreading rapidly in New York so I encourage everyone to be safe and get tested regularly. I apologize to those who were depending on me to attend previously scheduled events, but I look forward to joining you all very soon.”

Kim has called for the impeachment of Cuomo for allegedly covering up for months the full number of nursing home deaths from COVID-19 and even claimed the governor may have committed federal crimes including obstruction of justice.

Cuomo denies any wrongdoing, but the Justice Department and the US Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn are investigating the administration’s COVID-19 nursing home policies and reporting of nursing home deaths.

Kim also accused Cuomo of threatening to destroy his political career in a heated phone call concerning the nursing home controversy. Cuomo denied any threat.
