ALBANY, N.Y. — State troopers handed out 903 tickets to drivers using cell phones during a four-day crackdown dubbed “Operation Hang Up II.”
State Police Troop T, which patrols the state Thruway, launched the aggressive enforcement effort on Oct. 12 to crack down on violators of the state law prohibiting the use of hand-held cell phones by motorists while driving.
During a four-day cell phone crackdown in April, Troop T issued 816 tickets.
In 2008, Troop T issued 5,403 tickets to Thruway motorists violating the cell-phone law.
Violators face a maximum fine of $100 along with a $60 surcharge.
