Imagine drowning in the rough waters off of NYC and suddenly you hear a voice coming to save you — Mayor Adam’s voice that is!
Hizzoner said Friday morning that new high-tech drones with life saving capabilities would be hitting the coast of the big apple this summer, and jokingly said they would feature his ‘calming’ voice.
“We’re gonna use my voice because I have a calming voice,” Mayor Adams teased at Orchard Beach in the Bronx to kick off his ‘Summer safety plan.’
NYC beaches will staffed with lifeguards from 10am -6pm daily. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards aren’t on duty. Stephen YangThe drones will in fact have interactive capabilities. The new devices can connect swimmers in danger zones with first responders, give them guidance on how to swim in a rip current, and even drop them flotation devices.
“On land, in the air, or by sea, the men and women of the New York City Police Department will be keeping New Yorkers safe this summer,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Friday.
The safety strategy unveiled Friday will seek to ensure that locals are protected in a variety of circumstances across the city, not just on the beach.
The framework covers crime, heat and fire safety, water and beach safety, street safety, and youth and community programs.
“The official summer season in the city starts today and as we stay in the Bronx, we’re outside,” said Mayor Adams at Orchard beach in The Bronx Friday morning.
more than 500 NY’ers die from heat related causes every year, the city released a map of ‘cooling centers’ to keep them safe. Stephen Yang“We want all New Yorkers to enjoy the summer in the greatest city in the world, and we have so many activities that are happening, but we must do it in a safe way,” he said.
The NYPD will be launching its 2025 summer crime reduction plan, which will add more than 1,500 officers to posts in 70 summer deployment zones. The police department also added a ‘quality of life division’ which will enforce noise complaints, illegal mopeds, and other concerns that tend to ramp up over the warmer months.
“On land, in the air, or by sea, the men and women of the New York City Police Department will be keeping New Yorkers safe this summer,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Friday.
“Althought the weather tells a different story, the summer season is underway, and the FDNY is read for it,” said FDNY commisioner Robert Tucekr. Stephen YangThe emergency management division is also launching a ‘Beat the Heat campaign’ which shares preventative measures in extreme heat — in which more than 500 New Yorkers die each year. The city has designated ‘cooling centers’ that can be found on a map on the city’s website.
At city beaches, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM — and swimming is prohibited outside of those hours. Lifeguards will also be manning public outdoor pools, which open for the season Friday, June 27, daily between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Beach goers may also notice drones flying overhead this summer. The tech will be monitoring shark activity and can even throw flotation devices to swimmers in danger.
“Although the weather tells a different story, the summer season is underway, and the FDNY is ready for it,” said FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker, as cloudy, rainy weather dipped into the low 50s Friday..
“In coordination with our agency partners, the FDNY is prepared to patrol our beaches on land and over water, with our beach Gators and our drones. We know the warm weather brings many opportunities for enjoying the outdoors and the water, and our members will be there to make sure that help is available for New Yorkers who need it.”
According to the safety plan, here are some tips the City recommends to stay safe this Summer:
- Enroll in NYC’s Beach Notifications for real-time conditions
- Encourage teens to partake in the city’s ‘Saturday Night Lights program’ in which over 140 sports sites will be operating until 11pm in an effort to limit street activity.
- Check on vulnerable neighbors during extreme heat and use the Cool It! NYC map for info on sprinklers, pools, fountains, and shaded areas near you.
- Swim only when lifeguards are on duty and avoid alcohol while swimming.
- Use fire hydrant spray caps to safely cool off without compromising firefighter usage.
- Always perform a pre-season check on propane grills, and do not use propane grills on rooftops or multi-unit buildings.
