A Brooklyn bar mitzvah tutor convicted of sex abuse against two young boys in 2009 — and who remains wanted on allegations of a 2014 assault on an 11-year-old — is living freely in Jerusalem, where he’s raising a courtroom stink to protect his reputation.
In the US, the one-time Midwood-based tutor, Yona Weinberg, is considered a lifetime Level 3 sex offender — the highest level, reserved for repeat perverts whose risk of continuing to re-offend is high.
But in the Jerusalem suburb of Har Nof, Weinberg has been living without sex offender monitoring.
Israel has no sex registry, and since Weinstein’s open New York assault case is a misdemeanor, he cannot be extradited.
“I saw him in an ice cream store and he’s sitting there eating an ice cream,” said one outraged neighbor, who asked her name not be used.
“You guys have Megan’s Law,” she added, referring to the federal law that established the US sex offender registry. “Here, we don’t have that.”
Then, in 2014, Brooklyn cops sought to arrest him on charges of misdemeanor assault after allegations were raised by an 11-year-old boy.
After Weinberg flew to Jerusalem — before cops could arrest him — Monsey rabbi Yakov Horowitz tried to sound the alarm via social media, tweeting “Har Nof Residents: Convicted sex offender yona Weinberg is LEVEL 3!! Treat him as a terrorist with a machete”
This week, the unbowed rabbi, who directs the Center for Jewish Family Life/Project YES and who is an outspoken advocate for child sex victims, flew to Jerusalem to attend a preliminary hearing on the defamation lawsuit.
On Thursday, he doubled down before court, tweeting, “I. Will. Never. Back. Down. From the right to warn parents about the danger posed by convicted sex offenders.”
After court, he tweeted that Oct. 25 will be the next court date.
Weinberg could not be reached for comment.
“He just wants to be left alone,” Sam Karliner, his New York-based lawyer, told the Journal News for a story on Tuesday.
He added that Horowitz’s claims about Weinberg were untrue.
