Hurricane José is expected to weaken to a tropical storm as it turns toward the New York City region — but the area won’t be spared from steady rain and gusty winds, forecasters said Monday.

José remained a Category 1 hurricane — with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph — on Monday as it continued its journey northwest through the Atlantic.

It was forecast to remain at sea while moving through the Northeast on Tuesday, bringing rain to the region, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Tyler Roys.

“At most, one to two inches in New York City into western Long Island, and two to four inches across eastern Long Island,” he said.

The rain will continue throughout the day on Tuesday, but the Wednesday morning commute will be a dry one, Roys said.
