The Big Apple’s rash of gun violence continued into early Sunday, with four more shootings reported after midnight — including the death of a Brooklyn man who was gunned down at a memorial to gun-violence victims near Prospect Park, according to police.
Paul Pinkney, 46, was lighting candles for 28-year-old DeShawn Reid, who was shot and killed nearby on Ocean Avenue on Friday afternoon when Pinkney himself was gunned down, his family told The Post.
Pinkney was shot twice in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
“He was loved by everybody,” Tyquasia Davis, 30, the wife of Pinkney’s nephew, said at the crime scene Sunday.
“And everybody just can’t believe this because he don’t mess with nobody. He don’t bother nobody, you know? He just drinks his beer or whatever and said ‘hello’ to everyone. Speaks to all the children. It’s just sad.”
Davis said Pinkney, known to friends as “P-Funk,” was a handyman, doing “little side jobs here and there, just trying to stay free of the coronavirus.”
“He was out here because another young man died over there so he came from the young man’s candle lighting yesterday, right there where a young man died,” she said. “So, he went to go in and light a candle for him and somebody shot him.”
“It’s a really sad day,” Davis added. “They killing people’s children and peoples’ dads. And it don’t make no sense.”
At the same time Pinkey was killed, police said a 38-year-old man was shot and wounded in the leg in Ozone Park.
Police said the victim was on Rockaway Boulevard when two unidentified suspects opened fire on him. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital.
About one hour later, a 26-year-old man was shot in the abdomen at Lincoln Place and Franklin Avenue in Weekskville by an unknown gunman in a sedan, which then fled the scene, police said.
The victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital.
The shootings capped a week that saw the months-long uptick in gun violence continue in the five boroughs.
Police reported 62 shootings over the week ending at 7 a.m., nearly two and a half times the 26 gun incidents over the same one-week period last year. There were 76 people shot over that the past week, including 14 who died from their wounds.
