PITTSBURGH — A New York City man who says he came to Pittsburgh as a photojournalist to cover last month’s protests outside the Group of 20 summit has been ordered to stand trial on charges he threw a smoke grenade at police.

Twenty-seven-year-old Allen Weber declined comment as he left a city courtroom Wednesday.

He has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault, propulsion of missiles and other crimes for allegedly throwing the device at a SWAT truck during demonstrations Sept. 24.

An officer in the truck threw out the grenade in an effort to quell the protest before police say Weber threw it back at them.

Detective Brian Nicholas testified at the preliminary hearing that Weber “raised his arms just like he scored a touchdown” after throwing the device.
