New York City will begin housing dozens of migrants in Brooklyn’s popular, family-friendly McCarren Park Play Center as soon as this weekend, officials announced Thursday.
Roughly 80 adult asylum seekers will move into a wing of the recreational center, located on the border of hipster neighborhoods Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Mayor Eric Adams notified local lawmakers Wednesday night.
The announcement comes just days after Adams ominously warned that the Big Apple’s spiraling migrant crisis is coming “to a neighborhood near you.”
“Over the past week, hundreds of men have slept on the street outside of the Roosevelt Hotel in midtown Manhattan. As the homelessness and asylum seeker crisis continues to worsen, it’s the responsibility of every community to open its doors and provide shelter to those in greatest need,” Democratic Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, and Council Members Lincoln Restler and Jennifer Gutiérrez said Thursday in a joint statement.
The pols, however, insisted that “public access to the pool and fitness center will not be impacted” and that “additional security will be in place to ensure everyone’s safety.”

New York City is housing over 50 adult asylum seekers in Brooklyn’s popular, family-friendly McCarren Park Play Center.
Mayor Eric Adams has warned New Yorkers that the city’s spiraling crisis was coming “to a neighborhood near you,” as existing shelters burst at the seam with more than 56,000 migrants.
The makeshift shelter only for adults, which is located on the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, was set up with 100 military-style cots, toilets and showers.
Rooms inside the facility have been filled with rows of green cots covered in blue blankets. The wood-slat walls are still lined with butcher paper and photos of past events.
Asylum seekers are housed in the south wing of the McCarren Play Center, which has a basketball court and gym and also hosted an after-school arts program.
However, the Brooklyn rec center warned residents on that all programs in its south wing, including its media lab, are “canceled until further notice” because of migrant housing set up there.

There are 194 taxpayer-funded shelters providing housing, food and other services to migrants, according to the latest data provided by City Hall.
City officials claimed they’re reviewing 3,000 sites across the five boroughs as possible shelters.
