New York City school buildings will be closed Thursday due to an expected heavy snowfall, the Department of Education has announced.
“Due to expected severe weather conditions, all New York City district school buildings will be closed Thursday, December 17, 2020,” said DOE spokesperson Sarah Casasnovas in a statement.
The first snow day of the year will impact roughly 850 school buildings serving kids in pre-K and grades K-5 that opened back up last week.
Roughly 190,000 kids were eligible to return to those schools.
All of the city’s 1.1 million kids will switch to remote learning which will continue Thursday, the DOE said.
The majority of city schools remain shuttered due to COVID-19 safety concerns.
“After-school programs, adult education, and YABC programs are also cancelled,” Casasnovas said. “All takeout and community meal operations will be closed.”
The city could be hit with a foot of snow, officials have warned.
