The Taxi and Limousine Commission voted to approve 17 percent fare hikes for millions of riders.
Six members of the commission voted for the fare hike plan. Two voted against it, and one abstained.
Cab drivers argued that increasing lease rates for cabs and the higher cost of gas meant they needed to make more money.
The base fare of $2.50 will not increase but the mileage charge will.
The flat-rate between Manhattan and JFK airpot will jump from $45 to $52.
The surcharge to travel to and from Newark Airport will rise from $15 to $17.50.
The increases will go into effect in September.
