NEW YORK — Hundreds of teachers recruited by New York City from Jamaica, Trinidad and other Caribbean countries a decade ago say city officials have not followed through on promises to help them obtain U.S. citizenship.
The teachers were recruited in 2001 when the city faced a teacher shortage. Some say they are now worried about possible deportation.
City Council members introduced a resolution on June 14 urging the Department of Education to help the Caribbean teachers with their immigration status.
The Council members held a news conference at City Hall on Wednesday.
The Council members are also calling on Congress to include a discussion of the needs of teachers recruited from abroad in its debate on immigration reform.
