A Brooklyn teenager charged in the fatal stabbing of dancer O’Shae Sibley may seek a self defense claim now that a grand jury has indicted him on murder-hate crime charges, his lawyer said Friday.

Defense attorney Mark Pollard said he “strongly” believes Dmitriy Popov, 17, had reasons for allegedly stabbing Sibley while the professional dancer was voguing to a Beyonce song outside a Coney Island mini-market.

“Once I get all the evidence, I strongly suspect that we will be going self defense and that he had a reasonable ground, to reasonably believe that he had to defend himself in this situation,” Pollard said outside Brooklyn Supreme Court.

Popov, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants and a new buzzed hairdo, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment to murder in the second degree as a hate crime before Judge Craig Walker.

Popov — who turns 18 later this year — is being charged as an adult, according to prosecutors.

Pollard said said he’s waiting for additional evidence — such as more video of the deadly altercation — that could show Popov was defending himself.

Video obtained by The Post shows two groups of people wound up in a heated discussion in the parking lot of a Mobil station on Coney Island Avenue where Sibley, 28, was fatally stabbed July 29.

According to prosecutors, Popov and two others — after some back-and-forth — allegedly hurled homophonic and racist slurs at Sibley and his four friends, demanding “Get that gay s–t out of here.”

Sibley tried to diffuse the situation while Popov allegedly kept harassing the group, eventually pointing a knife at one of Sibley’s friends and stabbing Sibley on the side of his chest, puncturing his heart, prosecutors say.

Pollard defended Popov — whose mom, Lana, and grandmother, who did not give her name, were in the courtroom Friday — by denying the teen made any anti-gay or anti-Black remarks during the altercation.

“It’s my understanding that he did not [used hate speech],” Pollard said. “I suspect that other people did who were not arrested. I don’t know why but he did not.”

He also asserted Popov is an average teenage boy who lived with his Russian mother in Brooklyn and was about to start his senior year at The Professional Pathways Sheepshead High School.

He also clarified Popov is Christian — not Muslim — and attends church frequently, which was confirmed by his mother in her only comment to the press after the arraignment.

“Nothing about his past or history shows he’s the type of person to commit this crime,” Pollard said.

If convicted, Popov faces 20 years to life behind bars for knifing Sibley.

Popov will remain held on remand at Crossroads Juvenile Detention Center. His next court date is Oct. 10.
