The Big Apple just went 12 days without a single reported homicide — matching a historical record set nearly a decade ago, the NYPD said Monday.
The zero-homicide stretch ended Sunday night when a 38-year-old man was shot in the head in the Bronx.
Prior to the latest slaying, New York City hasn’t gone that many consecutive days without a homicide probe since 2015, when the record for the longest stretch without a killing was set, according to police.

Great execution. That’s how you set record after record,” NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said as she touted the latest crime figures.
“Thank you to the members of the NYPD who have sacrificed so much this year to drive down violent crime to record lows.”
In the Bronx homicide reported Sunday, police responded to reports a victim, identified as Gregory Stewart, had been gunned down in the stairway of the Sotomayor Houses complex.
Police took a person of interest into custody and were working to determine a motive.

Still, the NYPD touted data that showed murders had dropped last month to the lowest level since 2018 with 16 slayings, the latest crime data show.
In November, there were also zero murders in all of Queens and Staten Island, police said.
Overall murder was also down 46.6% last month compared to November 2024, according to the crime stats.
The promising stats come on the heels of a glowing report released by department brass last month that showed overall dips across several major crime categories.
Big Apple shootings hit an all-time low last month, which also marked the safest month in New York City subway history.
According to the stats, there were 167 reported transit crimes over the course of the month, a nearly 25% percent decline over the 222 crimes in November 2024.
“This was the safest July, August, September, October and November in recorded history,” an NYPD spokesperson said when the subway numbers were released,
With the Holiday Season approaching, retail thefts have also plummeted by 20% over the same time last year.
“These historic gains are the result of our precision policing strategy and officers executing that strategy with the discipline and dedication that defines this noble work,” Tisch said then.
“Our plan is working, the progress is real,” she added.
Among the most impressive stats was the shooting data.
The NYPD reported 652 shootings with 812 victims in the five boroughs over the first 11 months of the year.
That was an all-time low, besting the 696 shootings and 828 victims reported over the same time period in 2018 — the previous record, the department numbers show.
The only blemish on the stats was the number of felony assaults, which crept upward slightly last month over November of last year, with a 1.5% bump citywide.
