The city’s embattled Housing Authority and its biggest union, Teamsters Local 237, have struck a deal on a new contract that for the first time allows the agency to assign staffers to weekend cleaning.
The tentative agreement includes a 2 percent pay hike starting in May 2019 followed by a 2.5 percent increase in August 2019 and a subsequent 3 percent raise in 2020.
“They have an opportunity to work a schedule and have more time for their families,” said Local 237 president Greg Floyd. “It’s a win for everyone.”
Currently, NYCHA caretakers work a Monday-to-Friday schedule and can’t be assigned to regularly-scheduled weekend duties.
NYCHA referred questions about the tentative deal to City Hall, which declined comment.
The contract also includes a $1,500 bonus for workers who opt into the new schedules, which will allow NYCHA staff to clean housing developments over the weekend.
NYCHA will also be able to place employees on 10-hour shifts in exchange for four-day work weeks.
Ballots for the contract will go out at the end of the week and will be due back and counted on Dec. 28.
