A city housing authority groundskeeper was wounded in the crossfire during a shootout at a Brooklyn housing project Thursday, police said.
The 33-year-old victim, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority, was hit in the right thigh around 11 a.m. at Red Hook Houses on Columbia Street — with police saying he was just an innocent bystander.
He is being treated at Methodist Hospital.
Police said 19 shots were fired during the shooting.
“It’s concerning,” NYPD Chief Michael Kemper, commanding officer of Patrol Borough South, said at a press conference at the scene. “It’s very concerning, particularly when you look at the number of shots that were fired and our NYCHA employee is across the street providing for his family.

He said the housing authority worker was speaking with a supervisor when he was hit. Police said he is expected to make a full recovery.
Pave Academy, a nearby charter school, was put ordered to shelter in place following the shooting.

CitizenPolice Chief Joseph Gulotta, commanding officer of Detective Patrol South, said the gunman’s intended target, a 52-year-old man with “multiple arrests,” was hit by several shots and was listed in critical but station condition at Methodist Hospital.
CitizenCops have not announced an arrest in the incident and the investigation is continuing.
“It’s terrible,” said Red Hook Houses tenant Greer Davis. “It could have happened to me. It could happen to my sons. It’s terrible.”
