HIV diagnoses in New York City last year fell to an all-time low since the epidemic began, thanks in large part to a new preventive drug, according city health officials.

The Health Department recorded 2,279 new diagnoses in 2016, according to preliminary data, a decrease of more than 200 from 2015, when diagnoses hit what health officials called a “historic low.”

The city saw a nine-fold increase in prescriptions for the drug Truvada between 2014 and 2016, according to a survey.
