Charter leader Success Academy will suspend in-person classes for three days beginning Monday due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials announced Friday.

The operator currently runs 45 schools with roughly 18,000, mostly low income, students across the city.

Success Academy will train its teachers and staff to conduct distance learning for several days before activating a remote learning system Thursday.

“This was a difficult decision,” said CEO and founder Eva Moskowitz in a statement. “We know some families will have trouble getting childcare, and we regret that there is not a solution that meets everyone’s needs. But the coronavirus pandemic is unprecedented and evolving rapidly.”

Most colleges and parochial schools have already opted to suspend in-person classes while the Department of Education has held out against a system-wide closure.

The DOE has argued that vulnerable students and working parents depend on school as a social support.

Pressure to close ratcheted up Friday with City Council Speaker Corey Johnson pushing for at least a temporary shuttering.
