MINEOLA, NY — A New York City man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a police officer during a high-speed chase on Long Island.

Under the plea deal, Damon Banner of Queens will be sentenced to 16 years in prison.

His lawyer, Glenn Hardy, told Newsday it was “a fair and satisfactory result” for his client.

Prosecutors say the police approached the 26-year-old Banner in Hempstead last November after observing him approach a man from behind. They say he reached for his waistband, ran and jumped into a waiting getaway vehicle.

Authorities say he fired about four shots at police as they gave chase in a car. No one was injured.

Banner’s car speeded onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway where it crashed into some cars and the center median.
