The NYPD is deploying officers at mosques across the city in the wake of the white supremacist attacks in New Zealand that killed at least 49 worshipers.

“The NYPD is committed to the safety of all houses of worship, and the freedom to practice your religion freely without any fear,” the department tweeted on Friday.

A department spokesperson added: “The NYPD, in conjunction with our law enforcement partners, is closely monitoring events in New Zealand, and out of an abundance of caution is assessing security at locations around the city.”

Brenton Tarrant — who penned a manifesto full of white supremacist rants and describing himself as a “regular white man” — unleashed a fusillade of bullets at Muslim worshipers during their Friday prayers at the pair of Christchurch mosques.
