NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch hadn’t received an official offer to stay on from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani Wednesday — but insiders were urging the top cop to work in the socialist’s administration, sources told The Post.
The Democratic candidate had told Tisch prior to Tuesday’s election that they’d speak after Nov. 4 about his plan to keep her as commissioner, sources with knowledge of the conversation said.
The day after his historic win, Mamdani repeated his campaign promise to keep Tisch, praising her for rooting out the “incompetence and corruption” from Mayor Eric Adams’ cronies in the police department.

The pledge to retain the well-respected Tisch came as the Democratic Socialists of American member faced criticism during the heated mayoral campaign about his past anti-cop rhetoric, notably calling the NYPD “racist” in 2020.
Mamdani repeated Wednesday that he wants to keep Tisch. Dennis A. ClarkPowerful New Yorkers, such as Hochul; Kathy Wylde, who heads the pro-business Partnership for New York City; and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn) both publicly and privately pushed Mamdani to keep Tisch as he sought their backing, The Post previously reported.
They argued the move would assuage fears that the city would backslide on crime under a Mamdani administration, according to the sources.

In turn, Tisch has received advice to accept Mamdani’s offer — including from her billionaire family — and police power players wary of his pro-criminal justice reform stances, sources said.
“I would be in the city’s best interests if he kept Commissioner Tisch,” said Vincent Vallelong, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association union.
“He cannot be successful if he doesn’t work with the NYPD.”
Mamdani’s past anti-cop statements have created doubts about his commitment to the NYPD.
Mamdani does have a backup plan if Tisch ends up rejecting his offer, sources said.
He’s considering appointing Isa Abbassi, a former NYPD chief and public safety monitor for Paterson, New Jersey, as commissioner, the sources said.
Another former NYPD official — Rodney Harrison, who also served as Suffolk County’s police commissioner — is in the running to be Mamdani’s deputy mayor for public safety, sources said.
But some cops still harbor doubts about Mamdani’s willingness to support the NYPD, with one police source noting that the mayor-elect barely mentioned crime in his victory speech.
“He pulled the wool over everybody’s eyes and now we are stuck with him,” the source said. “He has an agenda that doesn’t include the police.”
Mamdani unveiled a transition team Wednesday that would help him staff his incoming administration.
His campaign pointed The Post to a another statement he made earlier Wednesday about Tisch when asked for comment about the job offer.
“I’ve made my intentions to retain commissioner Tisch clear, and I look forward to having conversations with her on that subject,” he said.
Tisch didn’t return a request for comment.
