A New York City police officer pleaded guilty to lying under oath during his testimony before a grand jury on a burglary suspect.

Pedro Corniel admitted he falsely told a grand jury he saw a suspect in the basement of an apartment, when he never went to the basement and never saw the person there.

Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson says he hopes the case helps get the word out that prosecutors don’t turn a blind eye to this kind of conduct. He says it “jeopardizes cases as well as the careers of those who should know better.”

As a result of Corniel’s testimony, charges against the suspect were dismissed.

Corniel, who was assigned to the 48th Precinct, has resigned. He faces up to a year in jail.
