NYPD cops fatally shot an elderly homeowner who allegedly “charged” at them with a handgun when they went to his Brooklyn apartment building to investigate a burglary call, police said.
The incident unfolded just after 1:15 p.m. on the second floor of 330 Lewis Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant as cops were going door to door to investigate a 911 report, according to police officials.
Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey said the encounter became heated when one of the residents, a 78-year-old man, answered the door holding a gun down by his side and “charged” at the officers while pointing the firearm.

Robert Mecea“They observe the firearm, they start yelling ‘No!’ [and] they start retreating,” Maddrey said from the scene. “The male exits the apartment with the firearm pointed at the officers and the two officers both discharged their weapons.”
The elderly man, whose name was not released, was shot numerous times and was taken to Woodhull Hospital, where he died. He did not fire his weapon.
His nephew had made the 911 call to cops reporting a burglary and told police that his uncle was at home, according to Maddrey.
“This is a tragic situation officers were putting the life and death situation investigate a crime progress,” Maddrey said.

Maddrey told reporters he watched the body-worn camera footage, which captured the man “clearly charged on officers with his gun.”
“We don’t know why,” the chief added.
The victim had called 911 multiple times since the beginning of 2023, sources told The Post.
At least there were for trespassing and disorderly conduct, one of which involved a female.
The Force Investigations Division Unit were investigating the shooting.
Both officers were taken to Kings County Hospital for tinnitus and minor injuries, cops said.
