Police shot a suspect after getting into a gunfight with him outside of a public housing complex in Brooklyn on Tuesday evening, police sources said.

The cops were on patrol near the Gowanus Houses just before 8 p.m. when they heard shots near the housing block on Baltic Street, police said.

The two cops rushed to the area, where the gunman pointed a pistol at them and began firing, according to sources. The cops returned fire, downing the man, and then called for medics, authorities said.

A witness who lives in a nearby building said she walked into the courtyard when she heard the burst of gunfire.

“They was reviving him when I came down. I just seen him on the ground and the cops were trying to revive him — face up — the cops were like surrounding him, bringing him to the ambulance. You could see a little blood,” said the 31-year-old witness, who asked not to be named.

The suspect was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital Center in critical condition, authorities said. He later died at the hospital.

No cops were injured, but they were taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, police said.
