*** A city sanitation worker was busted and charged with DWI after a car accident on a Eltingville street corner, law-enforcement sources said yesterday.

Charles Benway, 41, was driving at Amboy Road and Richmond Avenue at 4 p.m. Friday when he smashed into another vehicle, the sources said.

When cops arrived at the scene, they noticed Benway was slurring his speech and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

He agreed to take a Breathalyzer test, which showed his blood alcohol level at .11, the sources said. The legal limit is .08 percent.

QUEENS

*** A Bronx man was nabbed by cops after he stabbed another man in Rockaway Park, police said.

Cops responded to a call at 214 Beach 96th St. just before 9 p.m. Friday.

There, they found a resident, George Rodriguez, 32, with several stab wounds.

He was rushed to Peninsula Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

A short while later, Luis Alvarez, 36, carrying two guns and a knife, was picked up and charged with attempted murder, assault and weapons possession, a source said.

Armed with a search warrant, cops discovered two guns, five pounds of marijuana, three pounds of cocaine, $3,000, a shotgun and a rifle in the victim’s apartment.

Police have yet to charge Rodriguez.

*** A bicyclist was struck by an SUV while traveling down a Briarwood street, police sources said.

The cyclist was riding at Main and Manton streets at around noon yesterday when a Range Rover plowed into his bike.

The rider hit the pavement and suffered trauma to the head, the sources said.

It was unclear if the bicyclist or the Range Rover had the right of way.

THE BRONX

*** A woman was shot early yesterday as she chatted with a group of friends on a Highbridge street.

The group was in front of 1380 Ogden Ave. at around 2:45 a.m., when the unidentified victim heard several shots.

As the victim ran away, she realized she had been shot in the lower back.

She was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.

There were no arrests and police are searching for a single shooter.

*** A half-dozen people had a close call yesterday after their vehicle smashed into a highway divider yesterday, police sources said.

The mishap occurred in the southbound lane of the New England Thruway near East Gun Hill Road at around 9 a.m. when a van, bearing four adults and two children, was cut off by another vehicle.

The driver of the van apparently overcompensated, lost control of the vehicle and struck the cement median.

The van slid along the median for about 100 feet and flipped on its side.

The occupants had to be pried out the van by firefighters. Each was injured and taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.

The van’s driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

MANHATTAN

*** Three men peddling phony designer handbags and suitcases were busted in Midtown yesterday by the NYPD’s Trademark Counterfeiting Unit, cops said.

Officers spotted the men hawking the bags on West 53rd Street at around 3:30 p.m. and hauled them in.

Investigators seized roughly 300 fake bags bearing designer labels like Coach, Prada and Louis Vuitton, among others.

The men were charged with trademark counterfeiting in the third degree, cops said.

*** Two veteran thugs were busted near Times Square yesterday and charged with pickpocketing five college kids from out of town, cops said.

The two men stole wallets from the Maryland students at around 3 p.m. as they walked along 47th Street near Seventh Avenue, cops said.

One of the alleged criminals has 89 prior arrests while the other has 50 prior arrests – mostly for robbery, police said.
