* Ten people were busted for illegally dumping more than 20,000 gallons of toxic materials into Canarsie sewers, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced yesterday. “These individuals caused significant damage to the city’s sewer system while trying to make more profit on the cars they recycled,” Kelly said. In July 2001, The NYPD’s Auto Crime Division, joined by the State Attorney General’s Office and the Environmental Conservation Commission, launched an investigation into illegal dumping at four junkyards in Canarsie. Using camera surveillance, investigators gathered sufficient evidence that tens of thousands of gallons of motor oil, large quantities of antifreeze and transmission fluid were being dumped at all four locations. Cops then executed four search warrants at The Auto Gobbler, Jet II Auto Parts, A1A Auto Parts and Andy’s All Van and arrested the 10 suspects. They face felony charges of endangering public health, safety or environment, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines.
