Manhattan Police grabbed two burglars who allegedly broke into an Upper West Side store and hauled off at least four brand-name mattresses.
A witness spotted Dwayne Huff, 49, and Benjamin Daniels, 46, smashing the front window of a home-furnishings store at Broadway and West 106th Street at 5 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.
As the witness alerted police, the suspects walked inside and carried out the bedding merchandise, store manager Mamadou Kane said.
Police quickly found the thieves nearby and busted them on burglary charges.
Two 13-year-olds were busted yesterday for throwing a bottle of household chemicals that exploded outside a Catholic school in Inwood on Wednesday, slightly injuring four students and an adult. They were charged with assault and reckless endangerment.
A thief was arrested for stealing $9,400 from an Upper West Side bank, authorities said yesterday.
Jonathan Girodes, 29, opened a checking account with a small amount of money at a Chase branch, the DA’s Office said.
Then he allegedly opened a business account at a Bank of America branch on Broadway near West 107th Street at 5:45 p.m. on May 16 and deposited a $10,000 check written against the Chase account.
Five days later, Girodes made two withdrawals from the BOA account, for $6,700 and $2,700, apparently before the Chase check bounced. Police arrested Girodes on grand-larceny chargeslast Friday. It was not clear why he received the cash before the Chase check was verified.
A convicted swindler was arrested in Greenwich Village for using someone else’s identity to open a credit line and purchase $22,320 in laptop computers, authorities said yesterday.
Anthony Cundiff, 27, was busted May 24 when he tried to pick up 12 laptops at the United Parcel Service customer-service center at West Houston and Washington streets, the DA’s Office said.
The laptops had been shipped to Cundiff, but UPS held the merchandise because he provided an incorrect ZIP code for the ID-theft victim, sources said. On May 16, Cundiff opened the credit line with GE Credit and falsely listed his employment with Network Temps Inc., authorities said.
He initially bought four laptops and later purchased the 12 computers from Apple, cops said.
He was charged with identity theft and grand larceny.
Staten Island Police yesterday were searching for two thugs who allegedly shot a man on an Annadale street.
One of the assailants , a stocky man between 20 and 30 years old, was wearing blue pants, a blue tank top and blue sneakers. He and an accomplice were riding in a black SUV when they opened fire for unknown reasons at the 25-year-old victim at Pompey and Arden avenues at about 2 p.m. on May 21.
The victim suffered a leg wound.
Brooklyn A Brighton Beach man pummeled a female neighbor yesterday for allowing homeless people to stay with her so she could care for them, authorities said.
Demitriy Khozhev, 31, allegedly accosted the 38-year-old woman at 1:40 a.m. as she walked into her Brighton Fourth Street apartment. He shouted at her, then punched her twice in the head, causing bruising and swelling. The victim called police and Khozhev was busted on charges of assault, menacing and harassment.
Cops arrested a Bedford-Stuyvesant man who burned his girlfriend with a hot curling iron. Sources said Earl Coppedge, 26, argued with his gal pal, 23, as she was fixing her hair in their Lewis Avenue apartment at Hancock Street at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday.
After she refused to give him money to buy marijuana, Coppedge allegedly grabbed the hot curling iron and pressed it on the victim’s shoulder. The victim called police and Coppedge was charged with assault.
A man’s body was discovered in a grassy area off the Belt Parkway in Sheepshead Bay yesterday, police said.
NYPD Homeless Outreach officers found the unidentified corpse at 8:50 a.m. on the westbound side of the parkway near Knapp Street. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
A bandit was arrested for swiping $500 in cash and more than $2,000 in merchandise from his brother’s Brownsville store in two separate incidents last year, authorities said yesterday.
Yoon Kim, 42, first struck at 10 a.m. on Dec. 29 at his brother’s hardware store on Atlantic Avenue near Suydam Place, sources said.
He allegedly threatened a worker with a hammer and swiped the cash and several padlocks. The next day, he returned and stole the store’s video security system. Police tracked him down Wednesday and he was charged with menacing and grand larceny.
Queens A Jackson Heights man was arrested for hitting a clerk with a phone in a Queens hospital, authorities said yesterday.
Satnam Singh, 23, received a medical bill in the mail and went to inquire about it at Elmhurst Hospital at 11:06 a.m. on May 24, sources said.
Singh tried to talk to a hospital clerk, who did not understand his dialect. While an interpreter was being summoned, Singh allegedly went berserk and tossed a phone at the clerk, hitting him in the arm and chest. Then he allegedly threw a garbage can, toppled chairs and smashed an exit sign. Police restrained Singh, who was charged with assault and criminal mischief, according to a spokeswoman for DA Richard Brown.
The Bronx Cops got into a shootout with a group of bandits after they broke into a Baychester home last night, police said. The officers responded to a 911 call of a break-in made by a young boy at 3425 Edson Ave. at 10:30 p.m., and when they arrived, they were met by four men.
Shots were then exchanged between the group of thugs and the cops. One of the bandits was shot in the chest and another was shot in the back, sources said. It was not immediately clear who fired first.
The two were taken to Jacobi Hospital where they are listed in stable condition.
