* Thugs stabbed and critically wounded a man in East New York yesterday, police said.
The two assailants knifed the 24-year-old man in the torso several times on Van Siclen Avenue near Stanley Avenue at around 4:50 p.m., authorities said.
Cops responded to a call of a “robbery in progress,” and found the wounded man, who was rushed to Brookdale Hospital.
Police grabbed one suspect; the other is at large.
Manhattan
* Cops are investigating the mysterious death of an Astoria college student. Carmen Saldana, 23, was found dead by her mother in the apartment they share on 30th Avenue at around 9 p.m. There was no sign of trauma. Hugo Rodriguez, the victim’s cousin, said Saldana was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “She was a great person, always smiling always having fun. She knew how to live life,” Rodriguez said.
* A man was arrested for attacking a youth in the West Village, police sources said yesterday.
Lewis Pinder, 21, got into an argument with the 19-year-old victim on Hudson Street near Christopher Street at 4:15 a.m. Friday, cops said.
Pinder allegedly punched the young man in the face and neck, then picked up a broken chair from a pile of garbage and bashed him in the arm with it.
Police were called and arrested Pinder on assault charges.
* A burglar swiped $67,000 in jewelry after slipping into an Upper East Side apartment, police sources said yesterday.
The intruder, possibly using a key that had been left with the management company, entered the apartment in the Plaza Tower high-rise, on East 60th Street near Park Avenue, sometime between July 2 and 8, sources said.
He stole several watches and other jewelry before fleeing.
The 63-year-old resident, who had been on vacation, returned home on July 8 and reported the theft.
* A knife-wielding bandit snatched $325 from a restaurant worker and threatened to kill him in an Upper East Side eatery, police sources said yesterday.
The thief confronted the 27-year-old employee in the basement of Cinema Cafe, on Second Avenue near East 70th Street, at around 1 a.m. July 6.
He pulled a kitchen knife and said, in Spanish, “Give me your wallet. If not, I’ll kill you.”
The man handed over cash and the crook fled.
* A thug choked and robbed a man in the West Village, police sources said yesterday.
The assailant came up behind the man on Seventh Avenue South near Grove Street at around 2:10 a.m. Thursday and started choking him.
He then grabbed the man’s wallet, containing $150 and debit cards, and ran off. The victim was not seriously hurt.
* Two muggers were arrested for beating and robbing a man in the West Village early yesterday, police source said.
David Karwowski and Rafael Kordys, both 21, accosted the 24-year-old victim on Eighth Avenue near West 13th Street at 3:05 a.m., cops said.
They allegedly punched the victim in the face and took cash from his pockets.
Cops arrested the suspects, who were charged with robbery.
Queens
* Two thieves were arrested after robbing a pair of girls at gunpoint in a St. Albans home, authorities said yesterday.
Asinia Neale, 18, allegedly brought the girls, one of whom was an acquaintance, into the house on Anderson Road near 180th Street at around 9 p.m. on July 4. Neale then made a phone call, went upstairs and came back down with a male accomplice who was wearing a mask and wielding a gun, sources said.
The cohort then took the victims’ iPods, a cellphone and cash before taking off with Neale, police said.
Two days later, Neale was busted and charged with robbery, a spokeswoman for DA Richard Brown said.
Cops are still searching for the other suspect.
* A hammer-wielding teen was arrested for beating a man in Jamaica, authorities said yesterday.
Trevaun Holmes, 17, struck the man in the back with a hammer on 134th Avenue near Guy R. Brewer Boulevard at around 5 p.m. on July 6, cops said.
The victim suffered a ruptured kidney and underwent emergency surgery. Holmes was busted that same day on charges of assault and weapon possession, Brown’s spokeswoman said.
Staten Island
* Two police impersonators were arrested after they robbed a man in his Midland Beach motel room, authorities said yesterday.
Jaja Ala, 17, and Sergey Elvine, 26, identified themselves as cops while knocking on the door to the motel room on Midland Avenue at Patterson Avenue at around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, sources said.
When the man refused to open the door, the duo allegedly kicked it in, shoved the man to the floor and swiped $150.
Police were called and the pair was quickly arrested. A spokesman for DA Daniel Donovan said they were charged with robbery, burglary and criminal impersonation.
