A homeless man who passed out in a gutter got a rude awakening yesterday – when a traffic enforcement agent who hadn’t noticed him accidentally backed his small, scooter-like cart over him.
Police said traffic agent Phil Murray had just finished writing a summons at 2:46 a.m. on West 14th Street in Chelsea when he got back into his city vehicle to move on.
What Murray didn’t see was vagrant Garmejo Lazzaro, 41, who had flopped down in the street behind his cart after apparently passing out.
Unaware of Lazzaro’s pavement nap, Murray backed up about five feet, leaving Lazzaro with broken ribs and third-degree burns on his arms and chest from the heat of the exhaust pipe, a source said.
Police did not immediately cite Murray for any traffic violation because the incident appears to have been accidental.
