STATEN ISLAND
An off-duty cop wounded himself yesterday while unloading his gun, police said yesterday.
The incident occurred at 1 p.m. inside a private residence in Tompkins Circle in the Ward Hill section, police said.
The cop, whose name and command were not released, was taken to St. Vincents Hospital with a wound to his left leg in what was described as an accidental shooting.
THE BRONX
An 18-year-old Bronx man was arrested on attempted-murder charges for critically wounding a man on New Year’s Day, police said yesterday.
Edwin Nina, 18, of Beck Street, was charged with twice shooting a 31-year-old man in front of 920 Kelly St., in the Longwood section, at 2:10 a.m., police said.
The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition.
Police did not provide a motive for the shooting.
Two teenagers are under arrest and a third youth is being sought in connection with a car chase that injured five cops, police said yesterday.
The drama unfolded at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Fox and East 165th streets in the Longwood section when narcotics cops approached a stopped vehicle that was thought to contain a suspect wanted in a past homicide, police said.
As the cops approached, the driver fled south. The officers put out a description of the car and it was stopped a few blocks away, at Fox and Tiffany streets, where three youths fled.
One of the youths was apprehended at the scene and two others fled into a nearby parking lot, where one was arrested with the help of cops from the Aviation and Canine units.
Police charged Victor Brazoban, 16, of Simpson Street with reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle and obstructing governmental administration.
A 14-year-old was also arrested and faces charges in Family Court while a third man is being sought.
In the course of pursuing the youths, three cops from the 41st Precinct Anti-Crime Unit and two cops assigned to the 43rd Precinct got into a motor-vehicle accident at the intersection of Story Avenue and the Bruckner Expressway service road.
All five were taken to Jacobi Hospital, where four were treated and released and the fifth was admitted for observation.
QUEENS
Anti-crime cops nabbed three Jackson Heights youths who were spotted fleeing from a burglary in the Fresh Meadows section, police said yesterday.
The incident occurred at 11:45 a.m. Friday when the cops, assigned to the 111th Precinct, got a radio run of a burglary in progress at a house on 186th Street.
The cops surrounded the house and spotted three men fleeing through the front door, police said.
Diego Jimenez, 21, and Carlos Yanes, 25, were arrested a few blocks away, at 50th Avenue and Peck Street, near the Kissena Park golf course, while John Guzman, 21, was captured hiding in bushes of a house on Peck Street, police said.
All three face burglary charges, police said.
MANHATTAN
A bank robber fled from an Upper West Side bank yesterday morning with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
The robber entered a North Fork Bank branch at 215 W. 91st St. shortly before 11 a.m. and passed a note to a teller demanding money, cops said.
The teller complied and the crook fled.
Police are probing a gay-bashing incident upon a 25-year-old man in the East Village last month.
The attack occurred at 1:30 a.m. Dec. 23 at East Third Street and Second Avenue when the victim was punched and kicked by three Hispanic men in their 20s who also yelled anti-gay statements, police said.
The victim sustained bruising and refused medical attention. There have been no arrests, but the incident remains under investigation.
