THE BRONX
* A woman plunged to her death climbing down a fire escape to get into a locked apartment, in Tremont, police said yesterday.
The 34-year-old woman, whose name was withheld, found herself locked out of her apartment in the Concourse Hotel, at 2327 Grand Concourse, and was climbing down the fire escape when she fell at 9 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
But a resident of the building said the woman was trying to visit a friend in another part of the hotel.
It was not immediately clear what floor the woman lived on, but she went to the roof and began her descent from there, cops said.
She was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she died.
The woman was on public assistance and had been living alone at the hotel for about three months, according to an employee there.
Hotel resident James Thompson, 37 said she the woman had been ill.
“She was living with cancer and trying to find an apartment,” he said. The woman was estranged from her family but was attempting to get her kids back, according to Thompson.
“It was difficult because she was dealing with her illness,” he said.
* A 20-year-old man who was gunned down in front of a Mount Eden building nearly two weeks ago has died.
Jermaine Smalls was shot in the back of the head in front of 1734 Townsend Ave. about 6 p.m. Sept. 24, cops said.
Police said Smalls had been arguing with the shooter, who fled the scene in a white car.
Smalls was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he died about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
STATEN ISLAND
* A U.S. Customs inspector was busted for drunken driving in Fort Wadsworth, authorities said yesterday.
Carlos Mero, 38, allegedly rear-ended a car at the corner of New York Avenue and Marshall Road around 8:50 p.m. Sunday, law enforcement sources said.
The highway patrol officer on scene noticed Mero, who is assigned to JFK Airport, reeked of alcohol, slurred his words and was incoherent when asked simple questions, according to the sources.
Mero, who is charged with DWI, failed a Breathalyzer test, authorities said.
MANHATTAN
* Police are looking for the public’s assistance in finding this man (above), who they say held up three East Side banks last week.
The first of three heists in two days was at a Chase Bank at 255 First Ave., at 12:40 p.m. Sept. 29, cops said. The bandit passed a note to a teller demanding money, and fled once the teller complied.
The next day the robber pulled the same routine at a Citibank at 757 Madison Ave. Two hours later he showed up at a Greenpoint Savings Bank, at 245 E. 34th St. and brandished a hypodermic needle in front of a teller as he handed over a note announcing a robbery.
It was not immediately clear how much money the thief got in the three heists.
The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s, about 5-foot-10 and between 150 and 175 pounds.
* A 19-year-old man who was stabbed on a Hamilton Heights street last week has died, and police have arrested his killer, authorities said yesterday. Sergio Alizamo was knifed in the chest on the corner of West 146th Street and Broadway, at 8:25 p.m., Sept. 29, cops said.
He was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he died 17 hours later.
Lama Estrada, 21, of Queens, was busted for the stabbing, which police sources said was gang-related.
Estrada was charged with murder and weapons possession.
QUEENS
* Two thugs raped and robbed a 50-year-old woman inside an Astoria park, police said yesterday.
The attack occurred as the victim strolled in Hoyt Avenue Park at Hoyt Avenue and 29th Street at 4 a.m. Saturday, police said.
That’s when the two men knocked the woman to the ground, raped her and stole her pocketbook.
The victim was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens.
* A Manhattan man was arrested on a DWI charge yesterday after he crashed his car into a pillar in Long Island City, police sources said.
Rodrigo Abrajam, 30, of East 101st Street, was apparently intoxicated when he slammed his 2004 Chevrolet into the pillar at Crescent Street and Queens Plaza South, sources said.
Cops said Abrajam had bloodshot eyes and alcohol on his breath. Five passengers in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. (s, lcf)
* A 49-year-old man was discovered dead in a Flushing park yesterday after apparently committing suicide across the street from an elementary school, authorities said.
The man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was found lying beneath a tree with a single gunshot wound to his right temple inside Memorial Field at 149th Street and 27th Avenue just after 7 a.m., cops and witnesses said.
He was declared dead at the scene and a .38-caliber gun was found near his body.
