A veteran NYPD detective was shot and wounded Friday morning during a standoff with a gunman barricaded in his Brooklyn building following a feud with his elderly neighbors, according to police and sources.

Det. Matthew Gale, a 15-year veteran of the department’s elite Emergency Service Unit, was shot in the leg by 48-year-old Lamin Simmons – before four officers returned fire, killing the gunman, authorities said.

What happened this morning is a reminder that the men and women of the NYPD routinely place themselves between danger and the people they serve,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

“They enter situations that are uncertain, volatile, and often life-threatening,” she said. “This morning, Detective Gale put his life on the line doing exactly that.”

The standoff began around 5:45 a.m. when officers responded to calls of seven shots fired inside the two-story Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone on Kosciusko Street, according to Tisch.

Officers heard even more gunfire coming from inside the residence, and attempted to “make contact” with the occupant before they entered and found Simmons holding a gun, the top cop said.

The cops then had no choice but to step outside and call for additional help, she said.

Simmons’ wife and son escaped from the home uninjured, but the elderly couple upstairs couldn’t get out, according to Tisch.

The NYPD’s ESU, Hostage Negotiation Team and other specialized units then responded, cops said.

Meanwhile, officers managed to contact the elderly couple and urged them to lock their bedroom door.

For two agonizing hours, both hostage negotiators and Simmons’ family tried to make contact with him – until he began hurling a microwave, a lamp and kitchenwares out of a rear window, narrowly missing cops staged in the backyard, authorities said.

Drone footage captures him clutching a handgun in his left hand while moving around the apartment, police said.

By around 9:50 a.m., ESU cops entered the home and found Simmons still armed with a gun on the top of the stairs, on the same floor as the elderly couple, according to Tisch.

“Officers gave multiple direct orders to drop the weapon, but he refused,” the commissioner said. “The perpetrator fired at officers, striking one officer in the leg.

“Four officers returned fire, striking the perpetrator, who was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” she said.

Gale suffered a gunshot wound that caused a tibial fracture on his left leg and was being treated at the Kings County Hospital Center, authorities said.

“I just visited with Detective Gale and his wife, and I want to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kings County Hospital for the care they are providing him,” Tisch said. “I am grateful to report that Detective Gale was in good spirits, and we are praying for a full and speedy recovery.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who stood beside the top cop at the hospital, applauded Gale’s actions at the tense scene.

“What Detective Matthew Gale did this morning is what so many officers do each day,” Hizzoner said. “He put on his uniform, left his house, said goodbye to his family, and went to work to keep our city safe. When New Yorkers call 911, they expect someone to show up. What this officer — and so many others — did today was exactly that.”

Simmons fired about 20 rounds from inside the home during the ordeal – and two guns were recovered – a Beretta handgun with an extended magazine, and a Jimenez Arms .380 caliber handgun, authorities said.

Although Simmons’ family revealed to cops that he has a history of mental illness, he does not have a documented “emotionally disturbed person” history with the NYPD, the commissioner said.

“At this point in the investigation, we believe this incident began as a dispute involving the elderly couple on the second floor,” she added.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the apparent dispute was about.

One neighbor said that the slain man was well known in the area and described him as a “family guy.”

Another local resident, who only identified herself as Margaret, said he has twin sons in their late teens.

“He was dedicated to those children,” she said. “He was dedicated to those two boys. I don’t know what could have transpired.”

She recalled hearing the loud booms as the confrontation unfolded.

“That’s when I ran down,” the neighbor said. “Because you can hear it. I’m in the back, and I heard the shots. Because it’s the quiet part… This is a family block. Everybody knows everybody.
