A deer stranded on the rocky shores of New York City’s Governor’s Island has been sedated by police.

Officers from the elite Emergency Services Unit fired a tranquilizer dart at the large deer at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the sedated deer will be taken to a wildlife park on Staten Island.

A police boat in New York Harbor spotted the trapped deer running along the island’s rocky shore early Tuesday afternoon.

A department spokeswoman says the deer apparently swam to Governor’s Island. The island’s Web site says it is only about 800 yards from lower Manhattan and even closer to Brooklyn.
