Slain NYPD officer Anastasios Tsakos was sent off with a salute from hundreds of New York’s Finest on Thursday as his body was transported to his family on Long Island for a funeral service next week.
A phalanx of NYPD motorcycles and squad cars escorted the ambulance as it left the city Medical Examiner’s Office two days after the veteran cop was struck and killed by a drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway while directing traffic.

“We’re suffering a tremendous loss, and he can’t be replaced. A wonderful man, a wonderful father, and a wonderful cop. One of the hardest workers I ever met.”

Anastasios Tsakos was a 14-year veteran of the NYPD before he was killed. Steven HirschTsakos’ family said there will be a wake for the cop Monday at Paraskevi Green Orthodox Shrine Church in Greenlawn from 2 to 9 p.m., followed by a funeral at the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
