New York University’s class of 2020 will be having a graduation filled with pomp — and some really unfortunate circumstances.
Students at the $54,000-a-year in tuition school will have to celebrate on the day before their May 20 graduation with virtual “block party,” as the coronavirus crisis rages, the school said Thursday. The graduation ceremony itself will also be held online.
“We miss you, and wish you could all be together on campus for our annual pre-Commencement block party. 💜 Instead, Grad Alley is coming to you—in virtual reality!”NYU said in an Instagram post.
“Choose an avatar and celebrate with friends at one of the largest social VR gatherings ever held—featuring carnival games in Washington Square Park, a maze through the Bobst lobby, a chance to teleport to the top of the Empire State Building, and more.”
To meet up amid social distancing rules, the university wants students to login to the “party” between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on May 19. The event also features a “disco” dance club and NYU trivia games, according to the school’s website. No headsets are needed, only a computer.
Last year, NYU grads flocked — in person — to Yankee Stadium for a Commencement ceremony.
