MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. — A year-old baby is dead after a house fire in western New York.

Authorities say the child was trapped on the second floor of a burning home in Mount Morris, about 35 miles south of Rochester.

A police officer who was the first to respond to the 1:30 p.m. blaze tried to rescue the baby, but couldn’t make it through the smoke and flames.

Firefighters who got there next were able to grab the baby, but the child didn’t survive and died at an area hospital.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
