The Staten Island man who left his two dogs trapped inside a stifling hot car in Brooklyn allegedly told police he was drunk and forgot about them, police sources told the Post Sunday.

Kenneth Schnabel, 54, was busted on Saturday morning after someone spotted the animals locked inside the car on 64th Street in Bensonhurst and called 911.

Police arrived around 10:20 a.m. and administered oxygen to the two pooches before rushing them to a local animal hospital, where one was in critical condition, police said.

Saturday’s temperature reached a high of 89 degrees in Brooklyn, according to the National Weather Service.

Schnabel was arrested nearby shortly thereafter, and told police he was drunk and forgot the dogs were inside when he left the car hours before, police sources told the Post.

He was charged an hour later with criminal possession of a weapon — for a knife — aggravated cruelty to animals, neglect of an impounded animal, and leaving an animal in a vehicle in extreme temperatures.
