The Port Authority yesterday turned to an NYPD alum in the hope of righting an organization embarrassed by a long series of security snafus.

PA bosses tapped retired NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Dunne for the newly created post of chief security officer.

In the role, Dunne will oversee the 1,700-person PA police force as well as all other security staff at the agency’s facilities, which include some of the region’s bridges, tunnels and airports and the World Trade Center.

“During my time as commissioner of the NYPD, Joseph was a key member of my team, helping to dramatically lower crime throughout New York City,” former commish Bill Bratton said. “He will be a terrific asset to the Port Authority.”

A former chief of department and first deputy commissioner, Dunne will earn about $250,000. He’s to start next month.

Dunne retired from the NYPD shortly after 9/11.

“My solitary focus is to ensure that the agency’s facilities and the hundreds of millions of people who use them each year are safe and secure,” he said in a written statement. “Port Authority leadership has made it clear to me that security is the No. 1 priority.”
