ALBANY – Interesting spin from the Carl Paladino camp this morning in reaction to his campaign aide’s indictment on theft charges: The Buffalo developer’s not a typical politician. So he’s going to defend a political pal who’s been accused of a wrongdoing.

Nope. Never seen a typical politician do that before.

Here’s the full statement on the Manhattan district attorney’s indictment of long-time Republican operative John Haggerty from Paladino’s campaign manager:

“Unlike a typical career politician, Carl Paladino doesn’t throw his friends under the bus,” Michael Caputo said. “John Haggerty joined our campaign just 45 days ago and he quickly became a part of our family. He’s a loyal and straightforward man of character.

“Like all Americans, he enters this investigation with the presumption of innocence,” Caputo continued. “We are satisfied with John’s version of events and he will remain on our team in his present capacity.”

Paladino recently announced that Haggerty would oversee efforts to petition his way on to ballot to challenge former Congressman Rick Lazio in a primary. Haggerty’s under scrutiny for similar work he was paid to perform for Mayor Bloomberg’s re-election campaign.
