The parents of a bicyclist recently crushed to death by a tractor-trailer on an Upper East Side street endorsed congressional candidate Suraj Patel over veteran Reps. Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler for a new congressional seat.

The mom and dad of 28-year-old Carling Mott held an emotional press conference Monday near the East 85th Street site where their daughter was fatally struck on July 27. They said challenger Suraj Patel has a bike and traffic safety plan that would prevent such future accidents.

Patel — who is running in the Aug. 23 Democratic primary for the 12th congressional district that takes in Manhattan’s East and West sides — supports putting bike lanes on the Upper East Side’s streets, which Maloney, who has represented the area for decades, had opposed.

“Any bike lane is going to be better than my daughter’s death,” said Carling’s choked up dad, James Mott.

“It’s just beyond my brain that it wasn’t done four or five years ago when it could have been done.” 

Carling’s mom, Janice Mott, said, “This shouldn’t happen again.”

Janice said she “absolutely” thinks a bike lane would have saved her daughter’s life.

“Absolutely. No question in my mind. Because my daughter was a biker. She didn’t just pick up that bike and couldn’t control it,” Janice said.

The Motts decided to back Patel after seeing a column he wrote on bike safety on the streetsblog.org web site.

“Carling sent me angels. We want to thank Suraj Patel from the bottom of our hearts for this opportunity to allow us to bring a face to this tragedy and start a movement,” Janice Mott said.

“We believe that Suraj is the leader New York City needs today to accomplish our goals and New York City’s goals for safe bike corridors in New York City. The loss of one more life is a cost too high,” Janice added.

Carling was a production manager at Nickelodeon and many friends and coworkers showed up at the press conference.

Carling Mott was headed west on East 85th Street towards Madison Avenue on July 27 around 10:50 a.m. when she fell off her bike and was hit by a 2017 Great Dane tractor-trailer, police said.

The big rig was also headed west on East 85th and was waiting at a red light at Madison Avenue alongside Mott when the tragedy occurred.

Once the light turned green, Mott fell off her Citi Bike for unknown reasons and was struck by the semi, authorities said.

Mott, who lived less than a mile from the scene in Yorkville, died after being rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Sources said the city Department of Transportation tried to add bike lanes to a series of Upper East Side blocks, including East 85th Street, back in 2016.

The plan, which would not have eliminated any parking spots, proposed 5-foot wide painted bike lanes on East 85th, 84th, 78th, 77th, 68th and 67th streets between Central Park and East End Avenue, DOT records show.

But the plan was met with outrage from residents who feared the change would make the tony enclave less safe and bring more congestion.

A recording revealed that Maloney, a Democrat whose district covers the entirety of the UES, contacted a rep from Community Board 8 to express opposition to the plan.

She had said the plan was a problem because of the “security challenge” it’d pose to the ritzy private schools on the block, including Ramaz School, Loyola School and Regis High School, the veteran congresswoman said in the voicemail.

Patel, while declining to mention Maloney by name as hindering cyclist safety when asked, nonetheless said, “I think we all know who they are and we all have seen them and there’s reporting about it.”

“I want to make sure that the daughter’s memory is honored and their message is amplified and the change comes from this.”

Maloney declined to comment. Nadler’s current 10th Congressional District doesn’t include the East Side.

But following the Democrats’ gerrymandering debacle, a court-assigned special master folded his Upper West Side base into Maloney’s turf on the East Side into a newly configured 12th Congressional District. Nadler is running in the 12th CD against Maloney and Patel instead of the 10th CD.

Nadler had on immediate comment.
