School wasn’t canceled in the city on Friday — but after-school programs and field trips were, unleashing a fresh wave of fury among parents who now have to scramble to make early pick-up plans.
Department of Education Chancellor Richard Carranza didn’t announce the cancellation until 8:39 a.m. — long after students were forced to slog through the slush to make it to class on time.
“Due to inclement weather conditions all field trips requiring yellow school buses have been canceled today Friday, November 16, 2018,” the tweet said. “After-school programs, adult education, YABC programs, and PSAL activities are canceled.”
The post came more than an hour after Carranza announced schools would remain open, despite the fact that busloads of students returned home late Thursday because of the severity of the storm.
Fed-up parents slammed Carranza’s abrupt decision as adding insult to injury — while pointing out that the weather was partly cloudy and nearing 50 degrees.
“Have you looked out your window? It’s SUNNY & getting warmer!” tweeted @erinhayesbk. “This decision impacts hundreds of thousands of parents w/ kids in after school. This cancellation is completely unnecessary in the 1st place, and unacceptable that the call was made so late in the 2nd.”
Another parent posted about the undue stress he now faces of having to pick up his kid.
“What are you talking about??? The storm was yesterday! Today is sunny and streets are clean!” @Gangelo wrote. “And I’m at work and cannot get my kid in time. I’M WORKING! There is NO good reason to cancel after-school program today other than wanting to piss off parents!!!”
