An out-of-control driver jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant in Midtown early Tuesday, killing his passenger and gravely injuring himself, police said.
The driver, Shiva Sharma, 33, of the 2004 Nissan Altima was traveling northbound on Sixth Avenue near West 54th Street around 3:40 a.m. when the car jumped the curb and plowed into the hydrant, cops said.
Emergency responders found Sharma, of Wyandanch, N.Y., and his passenger, 33-year-old Juan Avila of Jackson Heights, inside the mangled vehicle with severe body trauma, police said.
The driver was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Paramedics rushed Avila to St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital, but doctors were not able to save him.
Cops arrested Sharma on charges of vehicular manslaughter for the collision.
Police sources said that speeding was a factor in the deadly crash, which totaled the vehicle.
“Seeing that car the way it was, there was no way that it was doing the speed limit,” a source said.
Fire officials said two other people were hospitalized in stable condition as a result of the crash.
The crash shut down a stretch of Sixth Avenue between West 54th and West 55th streets while the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad conducted an investigation.
